Among the crowd who turned up to pay their respects to the two women, was acting great Meryl Streep, who was seen alongside an emotional Gwyneth Paltrow, Courtney Love Candice Bergen and sombre Meg Ryan.
She carried a bunch of white roses - the actress is said to also be giving the keynote eulogy at a public event remembering the actress, according to .
Ellen Barkin, and Ed Begley Jr. were also among the A-listers spotted in attendance at the event which was held at the compound where Carrie lived next door to her mother Debbie, in Coldwater Canyon area of Los Angeles.
Courtney Love was also in attendance at the service, with daughter Frances Bean.
Glee star Lea Michele was also seen entering the venue.
The pair passed away last week within days of each other, and the service was kept to a limited list of close friends and family.
Carrie initially suffered a medical emergency on December 23 on board a flight from London, - she died on December 27 at the age of 60.
Her mother died the following day from a stroke, aged 84, at her home while making arrangements for her daughter's funeral.
Sources said, the service was an emotional affair which paid testament to the mother and daughter, not only their love for each other, but also their acting prowess.
Debbie and Carrie are according to to be buried at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills.
The Star Wars actress is said to have already been cremated, but multiple stories suggest some of her ashes will be buried alongside her mother.
Streep was pictured carrying white roses as she walked up the driveway on the gloomy afternoon.
Despite the terrible wet weather, mourners were not put off, determined to brave the elements to show their love and respect for the two women.
Stunning bouquets of white lilies were seen arriving at the venue, which was at Carrie's Beverly Hills home.
Gary, the star's black French Bulldog, was also in attendance at the service.
Most of those who came to the ceremony wore black to the event.
Carrie's brother, Todd Fisher, and her daughter, Billie Lourd, were left to plan the two funerals after the two women died at the end of last month.
To do a ceremony for both of them became complicated as they had differing wills - the Star War's icon wanted to be cremated, while her mother wanted to be cremated.
However they decided to solve the problem by putting some of Carrie's ashes in with her mother.
Todd Fisher told on Friday he was planning the joint service at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in California.
A family source, also told , there would also be an event at the Beverly Hills compound where mother and daughter were neighbours.
The source said: "I'm not sure what they're calling it - a funeral or a wake - but it will be Thursday at the house.
"It will be exactly what they both wanted, to be together."
