Who was Annie Nightingale?

Annie Nightingale, 83, was born in Osterley, Middlesex.

She began her career as a journalist for the BBC and ITV.

After joining the Brighton Evening Argus as a general news reporter, Annie switched to interviewing celebrities as the paper's first music columnist, before going on to present a pop culture show on the BBC.

She also co-hosted the music series, Sing A Song Of Sixpence, and put out her own chain of fashion boutiques called Snob.

Following this, in 1970, she became the first female presenter on BBC Radio 1 - a role in which she specialised in supporting underground music.

There she was the station's longest-serving broadcaster.

Annie also held the Guinness World Record for the longest career as a female radio presenter.

In 2020, she was made an CBE for her services to radio broadcasting and also became the first female DJ from Radio 1 to be inducted into the Radio Academy Hall of Fame.

On January 12, 2024, it was reported that the trailblazing presenter had tragically passed away aged 83.

Her family paid tribute, saying Annie passed away at her home in London following a "short illness".

They added: "Annie was a pioneer, trailblazer and an inspiration to many.

"Her impulse to share that enthusiasm with audiences remained undimmed after six decades of broadcasting on BBC TV and radio globally.

"Never underestimate the role model she became. Breaking down doors by refusing to bow down to sexual prejudice and male fear gave encouragement to generations of young women who, like Annie, only wanted to tell you about an amazing tune they had just heard.

"Watching Annie do this on television in the 1970s, most famously as a presenter on the BBC music show The Old Grey Whistle Test or hearing her play the latest breakbeat techno on Radio One is testimony to someone who never stopped believing in the magic of rock 'n' roll."

Was Annie Nightingale married?

During her lifetime, Annie was married twice.

At the age of 19, she began a relationship with a married newspaper reporter, Gordon Thomas.

The couple eloped to Brighton and later married, however, they had divorced by 1970.

She was also married to actor Binky Baker but the pair later divorced.

Did Annie Nightingale have any children?

Annie Nightingale is survived by two children - Alex and Lucy.

She shared her children with her first husband Gordon Thomas.
