Carrie Fisher's mother Debbie Reynolds said the actress 'is in a stable condition' on Twitter.

Patricia King, 69, who ­visited her at UCLA Medical Centre, Los Angeles, said: “The whole family is praying for her.

"We’re really hoping she’s going to be OK.”

Carrie stopped breathing for ten minutes following her heart attack while flying from London to LA, say passengers.

She went into cardiac arrest 15 minutes before the plane landed and paramedics waiting on the ground battled for another 15 minutes to get a pulse.

She was then rushed through LAX airport on a stretcher as onlookers said he was wearing an oxygen mask and had her eyes closed.

Daughter Billie Lourd is keeping a hospital vigil with Carrie’s dog Gary, who the actress frequently appears with on TV.

Her brother Todd Fisher, 58 said: “She’s obviously a very tough girl who’s survived many things.

“She is in the intensive care unit, she is being well looked after.

“If everyone could just pray for her that would be good. The doctors are doing their thing and we don’t want to bug them. We are waiting by patiently.

“We hope for the best.

“We certainly do not know her condition, that’s why she is in ICU. I’m sure everyone wants to speculate, but now is not the time for that.”

He added she was “getting the best care she can receive.”

Star Wars co-star Harrison Ford, 74, said he was shocked to hear about “my dear friend”.

He added: “Our thoughts are with Carrie.”

The actress had been touring the UK to promote her memoirs The Princess Diarist, in which she revealed an affair with Ford during the first Star Wars.

She has talked openly about her drug use in the past.

Carrie recently filmed scenes for next year’s Star Wars film, Episode VIII.

She also appeared in When Harry Met Sally and The Blues Brothers.
