Speaking exclusively to The Sun from a leisure centre after completing his first day, Vernon said: “We were saying on the run, it’s the bad people who make the news but running through Leicestershire my spirits were so lifted by the public.

“The generosity of spirit has been unbelievable.”

With the first stage under his belt, Vernon admitted he was feeling nervous as he prepared to take on the hilliest part of his 110mile journey - going through the Peak District.

He added: “I’m lying on the floor of a leisure centre right now, then we’ll have a debrief and then I’m having an ice bath.

“The route is really hilly so I’m not looking forward to it. I ran for 27 miles today and took three breaks. This section is so far so I’ll be running and walking.”

Vernon appeared live on Radio 2 throughout the day to update listeners on his progress.

He said earlier: "The hip just said 'hello' on the last mile, and my toes have got a bit twingey, but we knew that would happen anyway, so we'll get that massaged out and then we'll crack on, I don't really want to rest because I feel good!.

"The Radio 2 listeners are really showing their support, it's awesome.

"We're just coming up to 15 and a bit miles. We've got a couple of lovely ladies joining us from Ivanhoe Running club.

"Just had a massage on the left leg, but I think that's going to be the achilles heel - quite literally."
