Sir Michael Gambon dead updates — Harry Potter stars pay tribute to Dumbledore actor as cause of death revealed

SIR Michael Gambon has died peacefully in hospital aged 82, his family said.

A statement from his family said: "We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon.

"Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82.

"We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love."

Fiona Shaw, who played Petunia Dursley in Harry Potter, paid tribute to Sir Michael Gambon today. She told the BBC: “I will think of him as a trickster, just brilliant, magnificent trickster, but with text, there was nothing like him, he could do anything."

  • Which plays was Sir Michael Gambon in?

    Sir Michael started his acting career in the theatre, with Laurence Olivier as one of the original members of the Royal National Theatre.

    He appeared in many plays by William Shakespeare such as Othello, Hamlet, Macbeth and Coriolanus.

    The talented star was nominated for thirteen Olivier Awards, winning three times for A Chorus of Disapproval (1985), A View from the Bridge (1987), and Man of the Moment (1990).

    In 1997 Sir Michael made his Broadway debut in David Hare's Skylight earning a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play nomination.

    Sir Michael Gambon previously spoke about his heartache at giving up on his stage career due to health battles.

    He revealed in 2015 that the progressive disease had forced him to give up his beloved stage career as he struggled to remember his lines.

    Sir Michael said at the time: "Now I can't really do theatre. It breaks my heart, but I can't really remember lines."

    He was able to continue starring in TV and movies using an earpiece so staff could feed him lines.

    "He did once say to me in a car 'I know I go on a lot about this and that, but actually in the end, there is only acting'. I think he was always pretending that he didn't take it seriously, but he took it profoundly seriously, I think."
