Fifth Harmony singer Lauren Jauregui charged with possession of marijuana
The 20-year-old was on her way to Brazil at the time
FIFTH Harmony singer Lauren Jauregui has been charged possession of marijuana.
The singer was detained at Washington Dulles International airport on suspicion of drug possession.
The 20-year-old had "marijuana in her hand luggage" as she was preparing to travel from America to Brazil, according to a report from .
A police insider told the website: "Lauren was stopped at a TSA checkpoint and forced to submit to a secondary search, when a TSA staffer found what appeared to be a bag of marijuana in her carry-on luggage.
"Cops were flagged down in the terminal and they promptly arrested the singer."
A lawyer for the singer has now explained that Lauren was not officially arrested, but was "simply given a citation for possession of marijuana and released on her own recognizance."
A spokesman for the airport confirmed Jauregui had been charged with possession and released on summons.
Lauren was flying out of Dulles airport in Virginia and heading to Brazil, where the band were performing at the VEVO FunPopFun Festival.
She was unable to join the group for the gig in Sao Paulo, but the show went on without her.
The band performed at the festival as a four-piece, but the pop star's attorney has confirmed the incident at the airport "will not interfere with any future scheduled performances or activities."
Last month Lauren hit the headlines when she came out as bisexual.
The Fifth Harmony singer discussed her sexuality in an open letter on Billboard.com, in which she blasted those who voted for Donald Trump in the recent US presidential election.
She wrote: "I am a bisexual Cuban-American woman and I am so proud of it. I am proud to be part of a community that only projects love and education and the support of one another."
Directly addressing those who supported Trump, she added: "To every single Trump supporter trying to say that voting for Trump does not mean that you are racist, homophobic, sexist, xenophobic, assholes…
"That you just like the way he didn't really care what people thought and just said whatever he wanted… that he wasn't a politician, so he wasn't part of the establishment and didn't have corrupt money backing him. This is for you...
"Your words are worthless, because your actions have led to the single-handed destruction of all the progress we've made socially as a nation.
"You have, with your pure ignorance and refusal to understand the way the government and the world works, allowed a power-hungry business tycoon to take over the United States of America.
"The land of the free, the home of the brave, under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for ALL. You are HYPOCRITES."
Lauren penned the letter after speculation about her sexuality increased when a photograph of herself kissing another woman went viral online.
Fans of the singer believe the woman Lauren’s kissing is Lucy Vives – whose father is Colombian actor Carlos Vives.
It’s thought the picture was taking during a wedding on Friday and was later posted on Camila Jauregui’s Instagram page.
Fans quickly spotted Lauren kissing the woman and sent the snap viral – with thousands of fans sharing the picture along with gushing messages about the star.
The hashtag #LongLoveLauren also started to trend although there has been no confirmation whether there was anything romantic behind their kiss.
