Scott Mills hit by furious BBC complaints from Radio 2 listeners after ‘dangerous’ driving stunt

SCOTT Mills has been hit by furious complaints from BBC Radio 2 listeners after a ‘dangerous’ driving stunt on his show.

Back in June some of his audience weren't impressed when the DJ encouraged listeners to honk their horns to see if they would respond.

Scott, who hosts his radio show weekdays between 2-4pm, was on air speaking to a BBC Breakfast presenter, as well as a listener, who were both on their way to Glastonbury festival.

The DJ was interested to see how many people were listening to his show.

Last week the BBC website stated in the complaints section: "A listener complained this was irresponsible and in breach of the Highway Code.

"The ECU assessed whether the broadcast met the BBC’s standards, as set out in the Editorial Guidelines and elsewhere."

The Beeb later explained the outcome in another section.

"There is no specific provision within the Guidelines for this kind of incident," they said.

"The ECU therefore considered the complaint against the wider obligation of the BBC to stay within established rules and the law unless there are good editorial reasons not to do so.

"In the sequence concerned, Scott Mills talked to a member of the Radio 2 Breakfast show team and then to a listener.

"Both were driving, separately, to the Glastonbury Festival.

"He suggested they honk their car horns to see how many other drivers nearby were Radio 2 listeners, which they did.

"The injunction to blow the horn was limited to those particular drivers and the cars immediately around them.

"Use of a car horn is only permissible under very limited circumstances and in the ECU’s view the programme encouraged a potential breach of the Highway Code unjustified by the Show’s editorial content."

They added: ";The finding was reported to the management of BBC Radio, who have drawn the provisions of the Highway Code to the programme team’s attention."

Scott joined the BBC in 1998 and has had a very successful career over the years.

The Scott Mills show first ran in 2002 and radio DJ Chris Stark presented alongside him.

Last year listeners were devastated when the show had come to an end, with their last airing in August last year.

Scott is now on Radio 2, while Chris works for Capital Breakfast.

It comes after it was revealed that the star plans to tie the knot with partner of six years Sam Vaughan in the Spanish town of Sitges.

There will be A-list guests including Rylan and Greg James.

A source said: "Scott has always dreamed of a big camp bash and that is exactly what he has planned.

"The guest list has been a headache as he knows just about everyone in the industry but it's all coming together.

"The venue he and Sam have picked is just outside of Sitges and is stunning.

"They will have free reign of the place to make it there own. Sam's performance will be the cherry on the cake."
