Security staff intervened to try to calm down the unnamed fan, but they were forced to call police to deal with him.

A source said: “Whatever his motivation, it caused a huge scene — it’s very scary when someone seems totally uncontrollable in a crowd.

“They were already inside the venue but nobody was quite sure what he wanted to achieve — as soon as he started behaving suspiciously the police piled in.”

Onlookers told how cops quickly arrived and the disruptive man was handcuffed and bundled out of the venue by officers.

He was seen outside sitting in the back of a cop car still in handcuffs.

Rita, 32, was hosting the gig at Pryzm nightclub in Kingston, South West London, for fans who had secured tickets to see her unveil new album You and I.

When Rita was finally able to start the show after the delay, fans danced and sang along as she performed her hits including Body On Me, I Will Never Let You Down and Praising You.

And the commotion before her gig did not appear to affect her.

Rita took to Instagram after the show and said: “That was amazing.

“Playing these new songs live for you has been something else I’ve been dreaming about for so long.

“Thanks to everyone that’s come down to these intimate shows.”

Rita has been hard at work promoting new record You & I, appearing at HMV stores to sign copies.

She sang three of her new tracks in the Love Island villa on Tuesday night.

You & I was released last Friday and is already at number six in the UK albums chart.

The Only Want You singer was joined for Thursday’s gig by proud husband Taika Waititi, 47, who watched her perform from the side of the stage.

Rita married the New Zealand filmmaker in a small ceremony, about a year after the couple made their red carpet debut at the LA premiere of The Suicide Squad.

Rita worked with the Oscar-winning director on her videos for the album’s singles and said she has not ruled out working with him on a larger project.

In an appearance on This Morning earlier this week, Rita told hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary: “I’ve got a husband!

“Can you believe it? It’s so weird working with him but so fun.

“A lot of people say we look alike, can you see it?

“My friends say it, I did not do that intentionally.

“He really does have this great knowledge about music as well as film and books.

“He just expanded my creativity in a natural way which I am grateful for.”

A representative for Rita has been approached for comment on the incident.
