What illness does Amy Price have?

Amy was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IFP) in 2017.

Around 6,000 people are diagnosed with the lung disease every year.

In 2017, Keith Chegwin's family revealed that the legendary TV presenter had died of the condition.

The disease is a build-up of scar tissue on the lungs that makes breathing increasingly difficult.

It typically affects those around the age of 70-75, and is rare for individuals under the age of 50.

Some people respond well to treatment, but others can find their condition gets rapidly worse, and other problems like chest infections or heart failure can occur.

Symptoms include shortness of breath, a persistent dry cough, tiredness, loss of appetite and weight loss, and rounded and swollen fingertips.

The word "idiopathic" means that the causes are unknown, but in the past IPF has been associated with exposure to certain types of dust, such as metal or wood dust, viral infections, and smoking.

IPF is a terminal lung disease with a life expectancy of three to five years.

Amy has admitted she thought she was near death in 2022.

Speaking to Holly Willoughby and Craig Doyle on This Morning in July 2023, she said: "I gradually got worse and in 2022 I knew that was my last year because of the symptoms I had with the IPF.

";I could hardly breathe, walking was difficult, I was on oxygen more or less 24 hours [a day]."

In a separate interview with , which also included her daughter Katie, Amy expressed her and Katie's immense gratitude to her doctors and her donor.

There are only around 150 to 200 lung transplants in the UK each year.

According to , Amy's transplant will improve her quality of life and help her live longer.

What has Amy Price said?

Speaking about her experience of having a lung transplant, Amy said it hadn't been "simple" or "easy".

"There's a lot that's gone wrong with me, which the transplant people anticipate, because it's quite hard having a new organ in your body," she added on This Morning.

Amy continued: "It's the rejection drugs you have to take.

"You're monitored every week. I was grateful for it but I'm still not out of the woods, there's a lot still I'm going to improve on."
