When is The Last Tango In Halifax Christmas special on?

The Christmas special will be a two parter and the first episode is being aired tonight at 9pm.

The conclusion will be shown tomorrow night, Tuesday December 20, also at 9pm

Who is in the cast?

The Yorkshire based drama created by Happy Valley writer Sally Wainright has been off our screens for almost two years and the cast remains unchanged.

Series three caused a minor controversy with Kate's tragic death. Critics felt that the decision to kill off heavily pregnant Kate straight after her wedding to Caroline was a mistake - something Wainwright has admitted she regrets.

The new episodes jump forward two years and show Kate's partner Caroline, played by Sarah Lancashire still dealing with her loss and making some big changes in her life by embarking on a new job and new home.

Her move hasn't been well received by Celia (Anne Reid) and Alan (Derek Jacobi) but they are distracted by Celia's involvement in a local amateur dramatics production of Blithe Spirit.

Nicola Walker will be returning as Alan's daughter Gillian and sees her relationship with new husband Robbie (Dean Andrews) tested as her past returns to haunt her.

Will there be a fourth series?

There will be a fourth series but it's not yet known when.

Traditionally the drama has aired early in the year, but in January, writer Sally Wainwright confirmed that she was still writing and that filming of the long awaited season four hadn't started yet.

The drama has been nominated for numerous BAFTA's is one of the BBC's biggest hits, regularly pulling in over six million viewers.

Anne Reid told the TV Times in 2015 that the fourth series could prove to be the final one.  She said; "This will be our fourth run and I think that will be enough.  Derek and I said we'd only do two series but people love it."

"I'm happy to film another but I hate it when programmes go on too long and become a pale imitation of the original."
