NIALL Horan and Selena Gomez have given fans fresh hopes that they are more than just friends after being spotted embracing at the American Music Awards.

Loveable former One Direction hunk Niall, 23, was at the star studded awards show on Sunday night to perform his recent hit tune This Town.

Meanwhile Selena, 24, was in attendance to collect the Favourite pop/rock female artist award.

However it was during a commercial break of the televised awards – broadcast live in America from the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles – that fans were whipped into a frenzy as the pair greeted each other with a hug.

Watchful fans tracking the two in the audience snapped photos of the singers smiling, chatting, and embracing as the cameras turned off during the ad break with many excitedly commenting on Twitter.

"Niall going over to Selena last night to give her a hug and congratulate her," one onlooker wrote as grainy images of the moment went viral online.

An eyewitness claimed Good For You singer Selena ‘gently touched his chest’ as Niall went in for the embrace – adding the Irish charmer also hugged the American star’s sister.

E! reported that Niall also exclaimed: “You did so good!” after Selena scooped her gong and gave an emotional acceptance speech.

Naturally, the images was enough to give fans fresh hopes that Niall and Selena might start dating – with persistent rumours suggesting they were an item at the end of last year.

Hopeful fans took to Twitter in droves to express their excitement at the mere thought Niall and Selena could be together.

And it is possible more hugging happened away from the prying eyes of the general public behind the scenes at the Microsoft theatre.

Gossip site HollywoodLife claims Niall and Selena snuck away for one last embrace.

“She congratulated [Niall] in his incredibly performance. Then her team took her into a dressing room. And they hugged one more time,” the site reports.

Selena had previously shot down dating rumours in December last year when she addressed the speculation telling Entertainment Tonight: "Oh my God! No!"
