He had flown over from London where he lived in a houseboat to visit his elderly mother just days earlier.

Peter had gone snorkelling at South Beach in Fremantle when he got into trouble at around 10.30am.

The tragic announcement of his death came from Peter's brother, Michael.

He wrote on social media that he was "devastated to say" that his brother had "passed away suddenly" on March 16.

Michael went on: "Rest in peace, little brother."

On March 16, the day of his shock death, Peter had shared a selfie from nearby Cottesloe Beach in Perth on his Facebook.

Posting a video from the beach alongside the picture, Peter captioned the post: "More reasons to be cheerful."

The exact circumstances behind Peter's death aren't known.

Bystanders are understood to have desperately tried to save his life, performing CPR on the beach until paramedics arrived.

Tragically, emergency crews were unable to save him and he died at the scene.

He was born and raised in Perth before beginning his acting career in the mid-1980s.

Peter appeared as Jimmy Drane in three episodes of the Australian soap opera Neighbours in 1997.

He also appeared in a production of the Mamma Mia! musical and The King's Man in 2021, playing a Russian general in the third instalment of The Kingsmen trilogy directed by Michael Vaughn

Peter was best known in Australia for his roles in McLeod's Daughters and Chopper.

Tributes have poured in for the actor.

Friend Andy Burns said: "On the morning of March 16 a dear friend was taken from us... the amazing and beautiful Peter Hardy drowned while snorkelling at South Beach Perth.

"He was 66 years old and looked like a Greek god, so fit and so happy to be back in his native WA visiting from London where he had made his home.";
