What’s it Damilola, Our Beloved Boy about?
Damilola, Our Beloved Boy, tells the story of Damilola Taylor who was just ten years old when he died in a stairwell on a housing estate in Peckham, south London after he was fatally stabbed with a broken bottle.
The drama will show what happened on that tragic day and his family’s long fight for justice after his killers, teenage brothers Danny and Ricky Preddie, were finally jailed after a third trail.
It was written by Levi David Addai who said: “"I always remember Richard and Gloria (Damilola's on the steps of the court and their pictures being taken and then them disappearing into a cab, and I was wondering, what happened next?
"What was discussed in that cab? What happened when they got home? What I thought would be interesting would be to go behind the headlines of the family."
When can I watch Damilola, Our Beloved Boy?
This drama was shown back in November 2016, and left viewers in tears.
It was then repeated on May 28, 2017.
But it is being shown again tonight (August 21, 2017) on BBC 1 at 8.30pm.
Who is starring in Damilola, Our Beloved Boy?
Damilola is played by Sammy Kamara, a schoolboy, from Lambeth with no previous acting experience.
His mother Gloria – who died in 2008 – is played by actress Wunmi Mosaku who is best known for her role as Holly Lawson in Vera and Joy in Moses Jones.
Babou Ceesay, who was recently seen in the Channel 4 drama National Treasure as Robbie Coltrane’s character’s solicitor, stars as Damilola’s father Richard.
When was Damilola Taylor killed? What happened?
Nigeria-born Damilola, 10, had been in the UK for only a few months when he was attacked by Ricky and Danny Preddie, aged 12 and 13, on his way home from school on the November 27, 2000.
He was left to bleed to death from a stab wound in his thigh on a filthy stairwell in Peckham, South-East London.
After three trials the two Preddie brothers were sentenced to eight years in youth custody in 2006.
They were released in 2010 and 2011 respectively.
