Holly Hagan reveals Emmerdale’s dementia storyline has left her ‘in tears’ – but she hasn’t watched the show in years

The Geordie Shore star found Ashley Thomas' story devastating

EMMERDALE's dementia storyline has gripped the hearts of viewers across the country - and also, it seems, Holly Hagan.

The Geordie Shore star, 24, took to Twitter to express her devastation over Ashley Thomas' storyline - though did admit she hadn't watched the show in years.

Former vicar Ashley has been struggling with vascular dementia and his condition has worsened over the last few weeks, and last week saw him unable to move after he suffered a stroke.

Last night viewers saw the extent of Ashley’s vascular dementia through his eyes as his memory failed him.

As he held his daughter Dottie at the altar for her Christening, he came back into view having forgotten what he was doing, and assumed he was still a vicar and began to apologise to the congregation for forgetting the baby’s name or who the parents were.

Ashley began sobbing at the front of the church before a memory lapsed took him home.

But after being taken home, Ashley ended up forgetting he had attended the christening and with his clock broken, frantically set off to get to the church on time.

Jumping into the car, he set off, driving at speed to make it to the church.

But then viewers watched in horror after deranged Emma Barton tried to kill husband James by shoving him over the bridge.

His body slammed into the bonnet of Ashley's car and subsequently caused the huge pile-up.

Finn Barton arrived at the scene and saw Ashley, but rushed off to help someone in the crash. But the dementia sufferer ended up wandering off after he found a teddy and wandered into the woods despite being injured.

Laying down, it seemed Ashley was totally lost as his family tried to find him.

Holly, like many Emmerdale viewers, was left in tears after the episode.

The reality TV star tweeted: "Haven't watched emmerdale in years and it's on tv had me in tears after 2 minutes showing what someone with dementia is going threw [sic]".

A fan agreed, commenting: "my grandad had dementia was awful seeing him daily forget who we were :(".

Other fans continued to praise actor John Middleton, who plays the vicar.

One wrote: "As someone who's had their family affected by Dementia I'm so proud of @emmerdale and @john_Middleton_ for handling this storyline so well x".
