'THAT STORY SOUNDED BEST'

X Factor winner Matt Cardle admits he LIED about being a painter and decorator at audition as it ‘sounded best’

The singer also revealed he has ended his feud with James Arthur

X FACTOR Winner Matt Cardle has sensationally revealed he LIED when he said he was a painter and decorator in his first audition.

The singer, who recently starred in hit West End musical Memphis, said the sob story was made up, as it “sounded better”.

The 33-year-old told Digital Spy: "The painting and decorating story wasn't entirely true.

"I was doing anything for cash when I auditioned for that show but that sounded the best - ha ha!”

Matt won the hit talent show in 2010, the same year that One Direction came third, and at his first audition he told host Dermot O'Leary what he did for a living: "I've been working as a painter for a couple of years now - it's boring and monotonous and I hate it to be honest. I keep myself going by singing.

"This opportunity would mean the end of magnolia all over my face and hands, the end of brushes, the end of hotel rooms and the break I need."

But even with this fib, Matt says the show will always hold a special place in his heart:

"I will be eternally grateful to The X Factor. Simon and I catch up when we see each other so everything is cool there.

“Hopefully they'll consider supporting me with my fourth album."

Matt also had an ongoing feud with fellow winner James Arthur, but it looks like that is all over now: "We made up a while ago now.

"We attended a charity event last year and he came up to me and cleared the air.

"We have a mutual friend - Tony Cowell [Simon's brother] - and he was instrumental in resolving that little falling out.

“The X Factor machine is so intense and everyone reacts differently to the life-changing experience.

"I'm delighted James has proved everyone wrong and returned with a #1 single.

“So many people in the industry said it wouldn't be possible. It proves that with the right team around you and great songs - anything is possible."
