Little Mix star Jade Thirlwall reveals that struggle with anorexia left her hospitalised
The 23-year-old singer opened up about her heartbreaking condition in the group's new book Our World
LITTLE Mix star Jade Thirlwall has spoken out about her struggle with anorexia which resulted in her being hospitalised.
The 23-year-old singer opened up about the heartbreaking condition in the girl band's new book.
Jade revealed that the eating disorder began when she was 13 due problems at home, bullying and the death of a family member.
She said: "My periods stopped and things were getting out of control but I don't think I really cared about what was happening to me. I felt so depressed at the time that I just wanted to waste away and disappear."
The singer branded anorexia a "self-destructive thing" and said that it makes you "stubborn": "So when people are trying to tell you something you get it into your head that they're against you and you're not going to listen."
But it was when she was admitted to the hospital that she realised how dangerous it had become.
She admitted: "It took going to hospital to make me realise that it wasn't a game, it was something really serious. They sat me down in the clinic and were quite tough at first, spelling it out: 'You're destroying your body and if you keep doing this you will die.'"
When a pal had also ended up in a specialist unit in hospital for the eating disorder, Jade realised that she had to do something.
The DNA singer said: "It shocked me into making a change."
Afterwards Jade began therapy sessions and went to hospital every week.
Since finishing secondary school, Jade said that she has feeling better.
Yesterday, the singer pulled out of an appearance on The One Show due to "family problems".
Little Mix had appeared on the BBC One show to promote their new single, Shout Out to my Ex.
Band mate Jesy Nelson told hosts Matt Baker and Alex Jones: “She’s had a few family problems so she can’t be here.”
As Jesy spoke, Perrie Edwards and Leigh-Anne Pinnock pulled sad faces as they sat closely together on the red sofa.
Their loyal fans were quick to take to Twitter on Wednesday to support the trio and wish Jade well during her family problems.
One wrote: “Hoping your all ok and hoping it’s nothing serious. little mix isn’t the same without you [sic]”, another added: “so sad to hear about jade had a loss, always remember no matter what we’ll be with you our minnie”.
