LIAM Payne is celebrating after landing a lucrative new record deal - but some fans have lost their minds after getting the wrong end of the stick.

Fans began tweeting their congratulations to the former One Direction star, but many were fooled into thinking he had confirmed some big news about his girlfriend Cheryl.

Liam, 23, became a trending topic on Twitter last night as he confirmed he would be joining the roster at Republic Records to bring him on to the same US label as Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj.

The move is a major boost for the singer as he prepares to launch himself as a solo artist, and he celebrated by writing a short tweet saying: "Amazing to have signed to @RepublicRecords I am celebrating as I tweet thank you so much for accepting me to your roster of amazing artists."

His message prompted the hash tag '#CongratsLiam' to start trending, and many followers were convinced it referred to the pregnancy rumours which have been swirling around the couple in recent weeks,

One fan wrote: "That moment when you come on twitter, then you read #CongratsLiam and think @LiamPayne confirmed he's gonna be a dad."

Another added: "#congratsliam I had i little heart attack because i thought this hashtag confirm that Liam will be a dad."

Liam is rumoured to be expecting a baby with his pop star girlfriend Cheryl, 33.

The former Girls Aloud singer has been spotted sporting a more rounded tummy in recent weeks, fuelling speculation the couple are set to become first-time parents.
