Mercedes-Benz £90k ‘G-Wagon’ proves to be the must have motor for the rich and famous
The £90,000 car has boosted the brand's cool reputation as celebs are spotted with the vehicle
WITH Tonka truck looks and all the charm of a small tank, Mercedes-Benz’s G-Class SUV is not the sexiest status symbol.
But with Holly Willoughby, Will Young and Myleene Klass among its devotees, the “G-Wagon” is pulling ahead as the must-have motor for the rich and famous.
Pricier than a Porsche 911, it starts at nearly £90,000 and hits £141,615 for the top-spec model.
But if you are famous enough they are free, as Mercedes gives them away to trend-setting stars to boost the brand’s cool reputation.
The motor was dreamt up 37 years ago after the Shah of Iran suggested Mercedes build a military-grade off-roader.
Here, JACOB LEWIS presents a selection of celebs spotted in their mean machines.

Success after all these years lies in the quality

YOU have to hand it to Mercedes - a car which has hardly changed in looks since it was released in 1979 is still one of the most sought after status symbols in 2016.
Can you imagine celebs like Tinie Tempah rocking up to the BRIT Awards in a Datsun Bluebird?
The secret to its phenomenal success lies in its built quality. The G-Wagon - or G-Class to give it its proper name - is as close to indestructible as you can get in a road-going car.
That’s the reason at least 44 militaries, including Britain and the USA, use them, or have at some point.
So imagine you’re a celebrity with kids and you want to make sure your precious little darlings are safe on the journey to their mega-expensive private school. You’re going to buy the G Wagon.
It also helps that the badge on the front is a Mercedes, so you won’t fall victim to any school gate snobbery from the Range Rover brigade.
And while the exterior might seem dated, inside it’s pure luxury and high tech gizmos.
Everything is thought of. There’s even a button on the key fob which starts the interior heater but keeps the car locked, so on cold days you can make sure it’s nice and toasty inside before you’ve even left the house.
I’m lucky enough to have used the G Wagon off road, and I can vouch its go-anywhere credentials.
Although 90 per cent of them sold these days will only ever tackle the mean streets of Hampstead.
