Here’s everything you need to know about the swanky event…

What are the Academy Awards, and when are they on this year?

The Academy Awards are an annual ceremony hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Most people in the entertainment industry consider the show, dubbed the Oscars after the man-shaped statuette awarded to winners, to be the highest honour you can receive for your work in film.

This year’s Oscars are hosted at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California overnight on Sunday, February 26 (that’s TONIGHT), starting at 4pm PST (which is midnight in the UK).

How can I watch the Oscars in the UK and how long do they last?

Sky are broadcasting the awards in the UK on their Sky Cinema channel, which is created specially for the event.

However, as the show will run on US time, viewers on this side of the pond should prepare for a long night.

Red carpet arrivals started airing at around midnight UK time, while the ceremony began around 1:30am, February 27.

As well, NowTV are playing a live stream of the event , and news outlets will post live updates as the winners are announced.

The ceremony usually takes between three to four hours.

Who is hosting this year’s Oscars?

Reuters
Jimmy Kimmel has confirmed he will be hosting the 2017 Oscars ceremony

Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel is this year’s compère.

The comic has previously hosted the Emmys in 2012 and 2016, as well as presenting the American Music Awards five times.

Previous presenters include Ellen DeGeneres, Neil Patrick Harris, Seth MacFarlane and Chris Rock.

However, not all hosts have been golden, with Anne Hathaway and James Franco getting blasted for their turn in 2011.

Which films are likely to win an Oscar this year?

After the nominations were released on January 24, these movies look set to set to land multiple gongs:

La La Land (Best Picture, Best Score, Best Visuals)

La La Land stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as Sebastian and Mia, two dreamers trying to make it in Los Angeles.

Struggling actress Mia’s relationship with jazz pianist Sebastian becomes strained when his career begins to overtake hers.

The film is a callback to the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers musicals of days gone by, but set in modern times.

It’s already bagged an impressive 16 gongs this awards season — including a record SEVEN Golden Globes.

Hacksaw Ridge (Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Director)

This war epic sees the true story of Desmond T Doss, the first soldier in American history to receive the medal of honour without ever firing a shot in battle.

Andrew Garfield plays the war hero, alongside an all-star cast including Hugo Weaving, Sam Worthington and Luke Bracey.

The film has already been put up for five Bafta awards and was nominated for three Golden Globes.

Mel Gibson has been praised for his turn in the director’s chair, with many considering this film his “comeback” after his star fell following his DUI charge and antisemitic rant in 2006.

Jackie (Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Costume Design)

Natalie Portman takes on the role of the glamorous former first lady Jackie Onassis in this biopic.

The gritty film spans the week following her husband John F Kennedy’s death.

Jackie is forced to confront her grief after watching him get shot, leave the house she called a home and console her two children.

The film has been nominated for three Baftas and earned three Critics’ Choice Awards.

Which actors are likely to take home an Academy Award?

Denzel Washington — Fences (Best Actor)

Prediction site  has put its money on Denzel Washington winning his third acting Oscar for his role in Fences.

He stars alongside Viola Davis in the story of a rubbish collector and failed baseball player who faces discrimination in the 1950s.

Denzel is in a tight race with Casey Affleck, who beat him to a Golden Globe with his turn in Manchester by the Sea.

However Denzel was the victor at the SAGs, which has correctly predicted the Best Actor Oscar winner for the last ten years.

If Denzel wins the Oscar, he will be only the seventh actor to have won more than two, joining the likes of Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson.

Emma Stone — La La Land (Best Actress)

Emma Stone is Sun Bets’ favourite to win the prize

This year’s Best Actress race is between Emma and Natalie Portman, but Emma seems to have a slight edge.

Emma’s already won a Golden Globe and a SAG for her portrayal of struggling actress Mia, a role that involved singing and dancing as well as acting.

Natalie won an Oscar in 2011 for her role in Black Swan, and critics have named the role of Jackie her “best performance ever” — yet this may not be her year.

Michelle Williams — Manchester by the Sea (Best Supporting Actress)

This is Michelle Williams’ fourth Oscar nomination (she’s also gotten nods for Brokeback Mountain, Blue Valentine and My Week With Marilyn).

In Manchester by the Sea she plays Randi, whose estranged husband returns to their hometown with his nephew after the sudden death of his brother.

Other contenders include Naomie Harris, Molly Shannon and Lupita Nyong’o, who won the category in 2013 for 12 Years a Slave.

Dev Patel — Lion (Nominated for Best Supporting Actor)

British actor Dev, who started his career in TV drama Skins before being launched to stardom in Slumdog Millionaire, just lost out for his new film, Lion.

Patel plays Saroo Brierley, who was separated from his family at the age of five and, 25 years later, uses Google Earth to track down his birth mother in India.

Nicole Kidman plays Saroo’s adoptive mother, who finds it hard to come to terms with her son’s plans.
