LIFE AND GRIMES

Curse of So Solid Crew – from star jailed for murdering love rival to rapper who cheated on BGT judge wife

THEIR hit singles 21 Seconds and They Don't Know helped bring grime to the masses - but the glory days of So Solid Crew were short but sweet.

The band helped launch the careers of the likes of Ashley Walters, MC Harvey and Lisa Maffia.

But more than a decade after their chart-topping success, the band has been marred by controversies and tragedy.

This week it emerged Lisa's 21-month-old baby cousin tragically drowned earlier this year after falling into a hot tub.

Jetson Maffia-Kerbey was found face down in the water at a property in Sellindge, near Ashford.

Lisa paid tribute to him on Instagram, writing: "My handsome little cousin Jetson. I love you and your mumma. I'm so sorry you're gone so soon."

It's the latest in a string of hard knocks for the singer-songwriter, who emotionally revealed that her mother was battling terminal cervical cancer in 2020.

Lisa, now 43, had her own health scare last year when she was rushed to hospital in agony due to endometriosis and fibroids.

It followed a long recovery from a botched boob job in 2004 to uplift her "saggy" cleavage.

Lisa was given PIP implants - outlawed in the UK in 2010 after they were found to contain unapproved silicone making them more likely to rupture - and her breasts swelled to a size J.

Plymouth-born rapper MC Harvey attempted to launch a solo career and released his debut single Get Up and Move, which peaked at number 26.

But it's his turbulent personal life which has kept him in the spotlight.

In 2005 he married Britain's Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon, but after just a year she found out he was having an affair with former Eurovision contestant Javine Hylton.

Harvey and Javine went on to have a daughter, Angel, in 2008 but split after reports of infidelity on his part.

He married for a second time in 2015 to dancer Ghamzeh Mahdizadeh, after five years of dating.

But following the birth their daughter Persia in 2016, it was reported he had left his new wife for actress Elarica Johnson - just two weeks after tying the knot.

That same year he was jailed for 10 weeks for breaking a driving ban when cops spotted him behind the wheel while using his phone.

Jailed for murder

Carl Morgan served as the group's producer at one point and made a cameo appearance in their 21 Seconds music video.

But in 2005 he was handed a life sentence for murder after shooting love rival Colin Scarlett - the new partner of his ex, Elisha McFarlenne.

According to court documents, he felt humiliated after he was beaten up by Scarlett in front of Elisha in November 2004.

As a means of revenge, he went back to Scarlett and shot him dead after a gun battle in Tooting, south London.

Morgan maintained his innocence, claiming a third gunman had shot the victim, but was ordered to serve a minimum of 30 years.

Caught up in mass brawl

Seen as one of the group's most prominent figures, Megaman - real name Dwayne Vincent - was also charged with the murder of Scarlett.

Despite being accused of encouraging Morgan to pull the trigger, a jury failed to reach a verdict at an initial trial.

He was eventually found not guilty in 2006 at a retrial after a year behind bars.

Upon his release, he told MTV: "I was innocent. I look at my hands and say these hands are clean. These hands ain’t taken no life."

He had more legal woes in 2012 when he pleaded guilty to one count of affray after a mass brawl at a nightclub in Birmingham.

Last year he slammed venues that required people to be vaccinated for Covid before entrance.

Solo album flop

Things looked promising for MC Romeo when he released It's All Gravy - a top 10 single with US singer Christina Millian in 2002.

But his only solo album - Solid Love - failed to make a mark, peaking at number 46, despite producing top three single Romeo Dunn, featuring Lisa.

In 2008, he was set to release a second album, but it eventually got shelved.

Romeo ventured into reality TV; he took part in Celebrity Big Brother in 2012 and finished in sixth place.

He also starred in Fool Around with... Romeo, where he was put in a room with four girls and had to work out which one of them was single.

The singer had his own run-in with the law in 2004 after being charged with wounding with intent to cause bodily harm when a man was slashed with a knife.

He was eventually found not guilty the following year as the prosecution decided not to take the case any further.

Sky show ditched

Ashley became the stand-out star of the group when he swapped music for an acting career.

For his role as Dushane in Top Boy, Peckham-born Ashley, 40, received universal acclaim and was nominated for several awards.

With an estimated net worth of over £2.2million, he has also appeared in TV shows such as Grange Hill, The Bill, and Doctor Who.

Ashley starred alongside American rapper 50 Cent and Terrence Howard in the 2004 film Get Rich or Die Tryin'.

But he's anything but squeaky clean; Ashley served 18 months in a young offender's institute in 2002 after he was found to be carrying a gun.

He had more legal troubles when he admitted assaulting a security guard in 2013 and was fined for carrying cannabis the following year.

In 2016, he was ordered to pay £1,000 after using threatening behaviour aimed at a hotel staff in Islington, London.

From 2018 Ashley played cop Ronnie Pike on Sky One's Bulletproof, which he created and starred in alongside Noel Clarke.

But the drama was cancelled last year after Clarke was accused of sexual misconduct and bullying by over 20 women.

Ashley spoke out against his former friend earlier this year, saying: "It's not how I've been brought up, it's not something I condone."

He married his wife Dannielle in 2013, is a father-of-eight and has a grandchild.

Spared jail twice

Before the group's breakthrough with 21 Seconds, Skat D - real name Darren Weir - was fined £1,500 for breaking a 15-year-old schoolgirl's jaw.

Court documents state that she had refused his sexual advances, but he was spared jail by the judge who did not want to harm his promising music career.

His victim had to have three metal plates fitted and was awarded £3,500 in compensation.

In 2011, he was convicted of punching his 17-year-old girlfriend after she refused to do his laundry.

He was spared jail again and slapped with a 120-hour community order.
