Here are 10 things you need to know about season two of The Missing
At Disney theme parks, you never want to be called a special guest and in Iceland it's not nice to be called Santa Claus
1 After the success of series one, which starred James Nesbitt, this new eight-part run of The Missing is again written by brothers Harry and Jack Williams.
But there’s a new story and cast – Keeley Hawes and David Morrissey play Gemma and Sam Webster, whose daughter Alice returns after vanishing 11 years earlier.
2 Tchéky Karyo is back as French detective Julien Baptiste, who is determined to solve the disappearance of another missing girl, Sophie Giroux. Alice appears to hold clues to her whereabouts.
3 “The idea is: what would happen if a missing child comes back?” Tchéky explains. “Would it be heaven for the family – or hell?”
4 “Julien returns with his wife and daughter,” Tchéky continues. “He’s woken up from this lazy life he’s been in – being bored and missing the action. He starts a new journey against the will of his family.”
5 As in series one, the story is told using multiple time frames and Sam has a large scar in the present-day scenes. “It’s quite a palaver in make-up,” explains David. “It takes about two hours to put on. As we go through the series, how he got that scar is explained.”
6 He’s playing the parent of a missing child, and David admits he can be extremely protective around his own three kids. “I am a bit of a worrier. If one of my children is trying to grab a jam jar from the top cupboard, I’m full of fear,” he admits.
7 It’s a world away from the sunny role of Louisa Durrell for actress Keeley Hawes.
“Something like The Durrells is all so jolly, but this is the complete opposite,” she reveals. “I don’t mean to be down on it, but The Missing is not something I’ve done before and it’s definitely not something I’d do again in a hurry. The subject matter is so grim, it’s torturous right from the off.”
8 The story is set mainly on a UK military base in Eckhausen, Germany, where Sam is a Staff Sergeant, but the series was also filmed in Belgium and Morocco.
9 One Of Us star Laura Fraser and Endeavour’s Roger Allam also appear as Military Police Officer Eve Stone and her father, Brigadier Adrian Stone. Eve tries to find Alice’s abductor and Adrian wants to protect his daughter – and his reputation.
10 Could a third series be a possibility? “Let’s see with this one!” teases Tchéky. “It’s very different from the first run, but there is the same quality of playing with the timeline and having to deal with the puzzle.” Keeley agrees: “It’s brilliant as it has so many layers.”
The Missing is on Wednesday 9pm on BBC1
