Coronation Street’s Kym Marsh has an interesting view of her on-screen relationship with Steve McDonald
Soap star Kym thinks viewers are rooting for the long suffering couple as much as they did for the iconic Friends duo
CORONATON Street star Kym Marsh has likened her character’s relationship with her on-screen husband Steve McDonald to famous Friends pairing Ross and Rachel.
Speaking to The Sun Online at the Inside Soap Awards, Kym admitted she thinks viewers are desperate for the long-suffering couple to stay together as they endure one of their most explosive story lines to date.
Kym said: “I think a lot of people are really invested in Michelle and Steve’s relationship.
“Simon Gregson and I both say we’re the Ross and Rachel of the street.
“You really want them to be together!”
On the ITV soap, Kym’s character Michelle is pregnant by her on-screen husband Steve McDonald but she doesn’t yet know Leanne Battersby, played by Jane Danson, is also pregnant with his child.
Kym explains: “Knowing the character as well as I do, she’s not going to be relaxed about it.
“Michelle’s not the most forgiving and would you be if that happened to you?”
A new twist conjured up the soap’s writers’ means that Steve and Michelle’s unborn child could have Myotonic Dystrophy, a muscle wasting disease that can also have significant effects on the heart.
Leanne’s unborn baby is also at risk and Kym hints there are going to be huge “knock on effects” from the shocking news.
On Corrie, Michelle opens up to Leanne about the risk of her baby carrying the disease, setting off alarm bells in Leanne’s head who knows her baby could to be a carrier.
Steve however appears less than keen to find out and wants to avoid the genetic testing as he’d rather not know, leaving Leanne to try and pressure Michelle into making Steve go to the hospital without arousing suspicion.
This storyline is just one in a long line of gut wrenching scenes Kym has been involved in since joining the soap a decade ago.
But Kym admits she loves being handed scripts with challenging storylines, explaining: “She’s had a colourful life!
“It’s funny because the more they throw at a character, the better really.
“We’re a show about very strong women and downtrodden men.”
Kym also had kind words for her former cobbles co-star Michelle Keegan who’s received praise for her role as Lance Corporal Georgie Lane in the BBC One drama.
She said: “She is the most incredible actress, she’s a beautiful girl and I’m so pleased to see her doing so well – I’m proud of her!”
