Speaking to The Sun Online after taking home the gong for Best Shock Twist at the Inside Soap Awards, Charlie said she was "so chuffed" to win the award.

She said: "I thought it was a panel and that people thought they were being nice because Val is dead but it was the public so I'm really chuffed."

Her incredible final scenes in the dales saw a incredible helicopter crash smash into the pub in what was one of the most dramatic stunts Emmerdale has ever seen.

Ruby Haswell was the first victim of the horrifying tragedy, but Val later perished in the mirror maze after she sacrificed herself to save sister Dianne from being killed by falling glass.

Having planned to fake her own death to dodge prison for committing fraud, she went out in typical Val style.

Lighting her last cigarette, she goaded the jagged mirror poised above her: "Come on then, do your worst. I’m not frightened of you. I’m H-I-Val. I’m Valerie Pollard of the Valerie Pollard Foundation.”

She added triumphantly: “I’m Val,” before the shard fell and stabbed her, killing her instantly.

Speaking about her final scenes, Charlie said they were tough to film and that she didn't really want her character to die.

She said: "None of us could film them without crying, there were triggers that set us off. We had to breathe through it.

"We didn't want to say the words because we knew as soon as we said the words it was going to be final.

"I didn't want Val to die, I was really upset.

"Not because I couldn't come back but because they were killing off a vibrant woman but once I got my head around it, it was fine."

After leaving the ITV soap, Charlie now tours with her band and is still "a jobbing actor".

She added: "I'm in a women's band up in Newcastle called Kissed and I've been doing loads of singing.

"That gives me so much pleasure, oh its just great!"

It was a great night for Emmerdale at the Inside Soap Awards as they took home to top prize of Best Soap for the third time in 19 years.
