Emmerdale scoops top prize at Inside Soap Awards marking the show’s third win in 19 years
Popular series dominated the prizegiving ahead of EastEnders, Hollyoaks and Coronation Street
EMMERDALE scooped the top gong at Monday’s Inside Soap Awards – only its third in 19 years.
The popular ITV soap picked up the Best Soap award and dominated in several other categories too.
Seven year-old star Amelia Flanagan, who plays April Windsor, won Best Young Actor for a second year, Ryan Hawley and Danny Miller Best Partnership and Val’s death in the hall of mirrors bagged Best Shock Twist.
The rest of the gongs were spread between Walford, Weatherfield and the Oaks, with Casualty, Neighbours and Holby City each getting one prize each.
Coronation Street got Best Show-Stopper for its live episode and saw Connor McIntyre win Best Bad Boy for his role as Pat Phelan and Shayne Ward gain yet another telly award as Best Newcomer.
Shayne, who joined Corrie last year as Aidan Connor, said: “I’ve been blessed to have such great storylines in the first year that I’ve been here. This just rounds it off. It’s been a great year and this is the cherry on top!”
EastEnders celebrated Steve McFadden as Best Actor, Lacey Turner as Best Actress and Dame Barbara Windsor’s legendary exit as the iconic Queen Vic landlady Peggy Mitchell.
Barbara, who became an EastEnders regular in 1994, said: “I was nervous [about saying goodbye to Peggy], of course I was. But Peggy’s exit was wonderful – I really couldn’t have asked for more. The writers spoilt me, they really did!”
