I binged on vodka and quit school after being horrifically bullied – even my mum was nasty to me, says Demi Rose

The model, who has 20m followers on Instagram, even binged on vodka after classmates put chewing gum in her hair, she revealed on the Dirty Mother Pukka podcast.

“Through my childhood at school, I just got bullied by everyone,” she said.

“Boys, girls, and so I wasn’t really able to learn. Everyone just used to like to pick on me, put chewing gum in my hair, like, just to wind me up for their own entertainment.”

Demi, from Birmingham, says she was “diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, which means you’re tired all the time” - and started skipping school to stay at home.

“I think it was more like depression,” she says.

“I used to go to school for about three hours a week or something, just picking my favourite subjects and having therapy and antidepressants.

“There was one moment where I got so embarrassed, just by some girls, and growing up, I looked at my mum’s patterns of, say, if she’d have a problem she’d go to drink or whatever. So one day I remember being really embarrassed and my mum was at Weight Watchers and I was home alone, and I just poured myself two big glasses of vodka.

“And then she came home and I was sick everywhere. I could’ve been 15 or something like that. That was like a big growing up moment. Learning what to do, what not to do and how to handle things, because you just watch your parents’ patterns and then I had to learn, ‘That’s not the way to do it’.”

Demi - who has been linked to Kylie Jenner’s ex Tyga - says that things turned around when she joined MySpace.

“I just stopped going to school really. I just hated it. It was too much for me. But then my whole world became online, so I started MySpace and started posting photos and stuff.

“Then I got this recognition online and support. Then I gained a bit of a fanbase, I wasn’t that known then, but it just felt so nice to be appreciated by people online. It really did something for me. It was everything.”

Demi, was hit by tragedy when she lost both of her parents in one year - dad Barrie Mawby died in October 2018, from cancer, and mum Christine died of a stomach infection in June 2019.

And Demi, now 27 and dating DJ Chris Martinez, says she still feels “non-stop” pressure to look good because of a comment her late mother made.

“Even my [late] mum was a bit nasty to me,” she says. “She was like, ‘When I was your age I was more beautiful than you’. So I guess it made me try a little harder, you know what I mean? I just put myself under a lot of pressure.”
