Coronation Street fans congratulate the soap on reaching its 9,000th episode
They took to Twitter to praise the ITV soap for its milestone
CORONATION Street reached yet another soap opera milestone tonight when it aired its 9,000th episode.
The soap announced the significance of tonight’s episode with a Tweet that said: “We've reached the big one! Episode 9000 is tonight at 7.30pm - things have changed quite a bit since 1960!”
In the post it included a photo of the street then and now.
And tonight, fans took to Twitter to praise and congratulate the long-running, award-winning ITV soap on its achievement.
One wrote: “Here’s to another 9000 shows, keep up the good work and story lines too,” as another added: “Episode 9,000, quite an achievement.”
One other posted: “ WOW! 9000 episodes Many more to come?!”
Corrie first aired on December 9th 1960 but was only originally commissioned for 13 shows.
It is now gearing up for a week of big hitters next month which will see David Platt’s storyline come to a head in a very explosive fashion.
Peter Barlow is also returning and Toyah Battersby will be heading back to the cobbles at Christmas.
And with bosses adding a sixth episode to the weekly schedule, it won’t be long before it reaches its 10,000th episode.
Yesterday the soap earned itself 18 nominations at the Inside Soap Awards despite two shocking race scandals in recent weeks.

The ITV soap is currently being investigated by Ofcom over a racist comment made about Kunta Kinte and Mark Anwar was sacked from the soap this week after making racist remarks about Indian people on Twitter.
But it didn’t affect their nominations as they have one more that Emmerdale with 17 and four more than their biggest rival EastEnders who nabbed 14.
All four with battle it out for the top gong of Best Soap while the Best Actor and Best Actress categories are as hotly contested as ever.
