What has Roman Kemp been diagnosed with?

Roman was diagnosed with sleep apnoea in 2022.

Sleep apnoea is a condition that causes breathing to stop and start while you sleep.

The Brit Awards presenter told in 2022: "The doctors told me I must wear an oxygen mask.

"There is absolutely nothing sexy about going back to Roman Kemp's house.

"They are expecting candles and mood lighting but they're getting a Darth Vader impression into an oxygen tank."

What is sleep apnoea?

There are multiple different kinds of sleep apnoea but the most common is called obstructive sleep apnoea.

This is when throat muscles intermittently relax and block the airways while you sleep.

Some sleep apnoea may need to be treated with surgery depending on the severity of the case.

There are many symptoms linked with sleep apnoea but some of the most obvious are loud snoring and abrupt awakenings followed by gasping and choking.

Night time sweating, morning headaches, high blood pressure and a decreased libido are also huge tell-tale signs.

If you notice yourself experiencing mood changes such as depression or irritability, or are having difficulty concentrating, as a result of sleep apnoea you might want to pay your GP a visit.

Symptoms of sleep apnoea mainly happen while you sleep.

They include:

  • breathing stopping and starting
  • making gasping, snorting or choking noises
  • waking up a lot
  • loud snoring

During the day, you may also:

  • feel very tired
  • find it hard to concentrate
  • have mood swings
  • have a headache when you wake up

One main cause that can affect sleep apnoea is additional fat stores around the airways.

Those who hold more fat around their face and neck can be at higher risk of developing the condition.

Is Roman Kemp quitting Capital?

It was first rumoured in November 2023 that Roman was set to quit Capital FM's breakfast show.

Reports at the time suggested that he was stepping down after seven years to focus on TV, having got a presenting job on BBC's The One Show in the summer.

The news was then confirmed in February 2024.

Roman announced he was leaving while live on the radio with his co-hosts Sian Welby and Chris Stark.

He said: “I've got quite a big announcement and it is one that is really weird to say out loud.

"It's really odd, to be honest I had no idea how I'd start this. So I'll come out and say it.

"This is going to be my last six weeks on Capital. Which is a weird thing to say."

He continued: "What I can tell you is I’m not saying goodbye right now, I'm not leaving the show today and that's it, but it's not far away.

"It will come and that goodbye will come in five to six weeks.

"It's not a decision that has come overnight either, it's massive, I've not found it easy at all."

Why am I always tired?

Feeling tired or low in energy often - without obvious cause, such as sleep deprivation - could signal a health issue. See your GP if you have any of the symptoms below.

Sleep apnoea

Feeling tired during the day because you keep waking up at night could be a sign you have sleep apnoea.

Symptoms in the night include breathing stopping and starting, making gasping, snorting or choking noises and loud snoring.

Iron deficiency

Low energy during the day with noticeable heart palpitations could mean you are suffering anaemia, which is caused by low iron levels.

Symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia can also include pale skin and shortness of breath.

Diabetes

If you feel very tired and also have a constant thirst and need to pee, you may be suffering from diabetes.

Other symptoms can include sudden weight loss, thrush and blurred vision.

Overactive thyroid

Feeling tired all the time while also struggling to stay still, feeling anxious, nervous or irritable could mean you have an overactive thyroid.

It means the small butterfly-shaped gland in the neck is producing too many hormones, which may also cause swelling in your neck, muscle weakness, twitching or trembling and weight loss.

ME or chronic fatigue syndrome

Suffering extreme tiredness for more than three months is a warning sign you have ME or chronic fatigue syndrome.

It can also cause problems with thinking, memory or concentration and flu-like symptoms.
