When does Game of Thrones Season 7 air?
Game of Thrones season 7 finally arrived, after months of speculation among its hard-core fanbase.
Episode seven aired overnight on Sky Atlantic at 2am, and is broadcast on Sky Atlantic again at 9.00pm on Monday night if you didn’t stay up.
If you can’t wait in the morning you can watch it immediately on Now TV.
Season seven was delayed this year due to a shift in filming schedules in order to accommodate winter.
This means that despite the summer release date, viewers knew well in advance that winter was well and truly coming.
How many episodes will there be in Game of Thrones season 7?
While every season of Game of Thrones so far has had 10 episodes, season 7 only has seven.
This is down to the fact that the Game of Thrones book series – A Song of Ice and Fire – is expected to contain only 7 volumes (with five released so far).
Therefore, HBO are milking the franchise for all it’s worth by breaking the final volume into two seasons of TV – with the eighth and final season expected to have just six episodes.
Who is in the Game of Thrones cast?
The Game of Thrones cast is quite a mouthful – the main faces on the HBO show number in the double digits.
From House Stark you can expect to see Kit Harrington as the King-in-the-North Jon Snow, Sophie Turner as now-free Sansa Stark, Maisie Williams as Arya Stark and Isaac Hempstead Wright as Bran Stark.
Emilia Clarke returns as the Mother of Dragons Daenerys Targaryen after revealing her character was not being killed off.
Her invasion force is joined by Tyrion Lannister, played by Peter Dinklage, handmaiden Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) and Conleth Hill as Varys.
In King’s Landing, the Lannister twins are plotting their future with Lena Headey as now-Queen Cersei Lannister and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as brother Jamie.
The wider supporting cast also sees a huge number of returning actors returning.
Aidan Gillen’s Petyr Baelish continues his plotting and scheming alongside Sansa Stark. Liam Cunningham and Carice van Houten returns as Davos Seaworth and the Red Woman Melisandre respectively.
In Dorne, once again see Indira Varma as Ellaria Sand, Jessica Henwick as Nymeria Sand and Rosabell Laurenti Sellers as Tyene Sand.
The Greyjoys are also making their claim to the Iron Islands with Alfie Allen as Theon Greyjoy, Gemma Whelan as Yara Greyjoy and Pilou Asbæk as Euron Greyjoy.
Rory McCann as Sandor “The Hound” Clegane, Alfie Allen as Theon Greyjoy, John Bradley as Samwell Tarly, Gwendoline Christie as Brienne of Tarth, Kristofer Hivju as Tormund Giantsbane, Jerome Flynn as Bronn, Iain Glen as Jorah Mormont, and Hannah Murray as Gilly.
A plethora of other stars have signed up for the 7th season in supporting roles including Dame Diana Rigg as Olenna Tyrell, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson as Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane, Bella Ramsey as Lyanna Mormont and Jacob Anderson as Grey Worm.
Fans of Gendry may be in for a treat as Joe Dempsie who played the potential heir to the coveted Iron Throne has been spotted in Northern Ireland and is expected to return to the show after last being seen rowing away in season 3.
Jason Momoa has also teased fans that his long-dead Khal Drogo could make a return to the show.
Who has joined the cast of Game of Thrones season 7?
Harry Potter star Jim Broadbent has been added to the cast but it’s not yet known who he will be playing.
Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran will be guest starring in the HBO hit. Showrunners Benioff and Weiss said they had been after Sheeran for some time because actress Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark, is a fan.
It’s also been rumoured that Bastille will appear in the show suggesting they will follow Sigur Rós, Coldplay drummer Will Champion and Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody in a guest music capacity.
How dark can we expect Game of Thrones Season 7 to get?
In a word: Very.
Show star Alfie Allen (Theyon Greyjoy) teased season 7 will push all the characters to their limits – with lots more dragon action, and plenty more torture coming.
According to fan website Watchers on the Wall, Alfie opened up on the seventh series at Malta India Fan Convention, and said it promises “more of the same but better.”
He added: “There will be more dragons… lots more torture!”
Speaking about his character’s mental state, Alfie reportedly added that Theon is “skittish and full of fear…Basically, and then that can kind of, I guess, evolve into rage, which you might see…who knows?”
Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark, also revealed season seven will end on a “massive cliff-hanger“.
She made the confession in a chat with magazine, revealing the storyline will “crash down” as Game of Thrones moves towards its conclusion.
Maisie said: “It’s just kind of tumbling now.
“We’ve come to the climax and it’s rolling down to the end. It’s exciting…
“I really felt like at the end of last season everything was set up for how it was going to end.
“Every character came to a little junction in their lives.
“Now we’re all going to crash down together to however this show ends…
“[It ends on a] massive cliff-hanger”.
