She often sported bleached hair, striking make-up and out-there clothing which helped form the punk aesthetic of leather, rubber and partial nudity.

Leading tributes, Boy George said on Twitter: "RIP Jordan Punk Icon and teenage obsession. So sad!"

TV's Jonathan Ross added: "An amazing woman. She changed our world.

"And she loved cats. So sad she’s gone."

Rooke will feature in a new six-part TV drama series by Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle which follows the Sex Pistols' early days.

In biographical drama Pistol, she will be portrayed by Game Of Thrones actress Maisie Williams, who was last week spotted shooting a scene in a see-through jacket with nothing underneath.

Rooke is said to have advised Williams on her performance, saying: "You’re in a position of playing a role that is very strong, a strong woman, and a woman set apart, really.

"I decided that I wanted to be me, like a walking work of art, if you like, and I was totally and utterly unshakable. So she had to bring that to the role."

In her late teens, Rooke scored a job at Westwood's London boutique Sex, where the Sex Pistols were regulars.

She soon became a close friend of the band, and often appeared on stage with frontman Johnny Rotten, guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook and bassist Glen Matlock.

Rooke also managed Adam and the Ants, and even features on the recording of their 1978 song Lou.

She was also manager of Wide Boy Awake, and went on to marry guitarist Kevin Mooney.

The couple split in the mid-1980s.
