Sir Paul McCartney will headline this year’s Glastonbury Festival just a week after his 80th birthday

SIR Paul McCartney is one of the greatest musicians of all time and now he is returning to one of the most famous stages in the world - by headlining Glastonbury.

The Beatles star will finally perform on the Pyramid Stage in June, after the 2020 event he was due to play at was cancelled due to Covid-19.

It will make him the oldest artist to headline Glastonbury ever, as it will take place just a week after his 80th birthday.

Macca, 79, will play on the Saturday night following sets from Noel Gallagher and Haim, with Billie Eilish doing so on the Friday and Kendrick Lamar closing the festival on the Sunday.

An official announcement of this year’s line-up is expected in the coming weeks.

On Thursday Paul dropped a teaser when he announced his Paul McCartney Got Back tour, which will see him perform across the States from April to mid-June - a fortnight before Glastonbury.

A music insider said: “Paul’s set will be an absolutely must-see. He is really excited for it and is determined to put on a hell of a show packed with all of the hits.

“He is feeling really ready to get back out on the road in the US and then will be raring to tackle Glasto when he gets back.

“There was some discussion about whether he should go ahead with shows this year because of the situation with Covid, but he decided he really wants to perform.

Glastonbury is such an amazing event to headline and he knows it will be an incredible moment for him.”

It comes after this week The Sun revealed Taylor Swift, who had also been due to headline in 2020, has decided not to return this year.

Paul last headlined at Worthy Farm, Somerset 18 years ago in 2004, with Oasis and Muse also topping the bill.
