25th anniversary award

Tonight’s the Mercury Music Prize 2016, so who’s on the shortlist and who’s performing?

It is the 25th birthday of the award ceremony

IT'S the award's 25th birthday and it's set to be bigger and better than ever.

Benjamin Clementine won last year with his album At Least for Now, but tonight's bash is thought to be all about David Bowie.

Bowie, who died in January, will become the first person to receive the £25,000 prize if his Blackstar album wins.

Since the awards were created in 1992 as an alternative to the Brit Awards, the Mercury Music Prize has established itself as a prestigious prize in the non-mainstream music world.

The prize is open to all types of music, including pop, rock, folk, urban, dance, jazz, blues, electronica and classical.
