From the new Blair Witch to The Intern, Jamie East reveals this month’s hottest movie and TV watches

While the big superhero summer blockbusters (or damp squibs) have been and, largely, gone now, there are still amazing films coming our way this month that should do serious business in the East household.

The Girl on The Train will, I hope, be as good an adaptation of the gazillion-selling book as Gone Girl was.

Paula Hawkins’ tale of a depressed, lonely commuter unwittingly falling into a dangerous situation had me turning the pages so fast my fingers were a blur. I love a tense thriller!

I’m also a fan of cheesy, big old adventure romps and in another book adaptation out this month – Dan Brown’s Inferno – I’m 99.99% certain Ron Howard and Tom Hanks will not let me down.

The odd-looking mullet is still present, but this time it is accompanied by Felicity Jones, arguably the hottest female star on the planet right now (or she will be by the time Rogue One comes out in December).

I’m not expecting Citizen Kane, just a bloody good time watching middle-aged men solve difficult puzzles in beautiful locations, please!

Finally, just when you thought the horror genre was getting a bit stale, along comes Blair Witch to send shivers down spines again.

It changed the face of cinema all those years ago, and while I doubt this sequel will have the same impact, I’m sure it’s just as terrifying.

Jamie on the Small Screen

We’re not quite at the stage of the year where we’re curling up in our thick socks sipping soup, but if you’ve already turned your heating
on, may I offer up a couple of treats available over on Sky Cinema.

First The Intern, which gives us the genius pairing of Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway in this gentle comedy about a 70-year-old man attempting to intern at a new-fangled web company, offering his considerable experience of both business and life in general.

These two are at their best in an on-screen duo that, unusually, has great chemistry without romance.

This is the best film De Niro has been in for some time.

Sticking with comedy pairings, the more in-your-face Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell team up for their second movie together in Daddy’s Home.

Ferrell is the nice, gentle, kind stepdad, while Wahlberg is the handsome and charming biological father who arrives to reclaim what he thinks is rightfully his – namely his ex-wife and two kids.

A ton of awkward laugh-out-loud moments ensue, including Will Ferrell discussing his sperm count with the natural father of his stepkids. Poor bugger!

That’s what he does best though – makes you feel a whole lot better about yourself.
