How did Amanda Redman get the burns on her arm?

Amanda, now 62-years-old, is badly scarred on her left arm as a result of an accident when she was 18 months old.

She was scalded with a pan of boiling-hot turkey-and-vegetable soup and suffered burns to 75 per cent of her body.

Her arm was the only part of her body permanently affected, but the trauma was so severe that she was pronounced clinically dead at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, Sussex

The TV star was left facing a lifetime of repeat surgery since her damaged skin needed constant repair as she grew.

But Amanda defied the mantra that success in the acting business depends on physical perfection as much as ability, proudly displaying the scars on her left arm in public and her TV shows.

What has Amanda Redman said on her burns?

In March 2020, Amanda talked about the accident and what happened to her on Boxing Day 1958.

Talking on This Morning she said: "I pulled this vat all over me, it was full of turkey and sauce as it was Christmas and I pulled it over me, you could just see my legs.

"I was pronounced clinically dead. That must have been awful for my parents. Of course I don’t remember it.

"My first memories are of the hospital. I remember some horrible things but not the same way as my parents."

Amanda said she doesn't believe the incident, which left her with permanent scarring on her left arm, has hindered her career.

She said: "Even though 90 per cent of my body was burned, the worst scars are on my [left] arm, but that's it and that's thanks to the amazing work of the hospital.

"I honestly don't think [it has stopped me getting roles]. I could be wrong but I don’t think about it."

Back in 2015, Amanda revealed her mum's "guilt" about what had happened to her.

Right up until her death in November 2014 her mother Joan was haunted by the cries of her daughter as she tipped boiling soup over herself as a child.

Speaking to the , Amanda said: "For the rest of her days my mother would go absolutely cold whenever she heard a baby cry in a way that reminded her of that day.

"Just like any parent whose child is injured when their back is turned I think she felt very guilty.

"Even though it was nothing more than a terrible accident it stayed with her all those years."
