Great British Bake Off’s saucy squirrel gets the sack and is replaced by plucky pheasant

GREAT British Bake Off fans have gone nuts — after its saucy squirrel mascot was replaced with a plucky pheasant.

The show had featured scenes of a well-endowed squirrel flashing its spotted dick since the final of series two in 2011.

But on Wednesday’s first show of the new series, the brazen rodent appeared to have been given the nut sack.

However, the hit BBC1 show, judged by bakers Paul Hollywood, 50, and Mary Berry, 81, was still laden with innuendo.

Episode one saw 13 saucy comments in the first 20 minutes — including one gag about a sex toy within a few seconds by host Sue Perkins, 46.

Its replacement has received a cold response from viewers

The new pheasant mascot got mixed reactions from the opening show’s 10.4million viewers.

Adrian Bradley tweeted: “A pheasant is no substitute for a well-endowed squirrel.”

Jo Young wrote: “Where’s the squirrel? Stuff the pheasant!”

And @colleyswobbles posted a picture of the squirrel and wrote: “Nice to see Great British Bake Off back on, but I’m missing this guy #bigballs.”

Maria Cristina wrote: “Gutted the squirrel got the boot.

“Pheasant is doing a decent job though.”

Fiona Nicholls added: “Lots of love being shown for the humble pheasant on the first episode of this year’s #GBBO.”

Angela Ashcroft tweeted: “Loved the #GBBO pheasant strolling around!”

And Lucy Clare said: “Particularly enjoying gratuitous pheasant shots on GBBO.”

The squirrel also had a Twitter account — and wags soon set one up for the pheasant.

It tweeted: “@GBBOSquirrel dropped by #GBBO after indecent exposure scandal.

“Like a phoenix from his ashes, I rise to stardom, just don’t put me in a pie!”

Last night a Bake Off source said: “We simply work with whatever nature gives us, and this year it gave us pheasants.”
