But their decision to close boxer Dylan, who died in May 2015, has upset those watching at home who have criticised the couple for not adopting.

One angry viewer asked: “So spend ££££££s on cloning your dead dog, instead of rehoming dogs who desperately need a home? F**king selfish #thismorning #AdoptDontShop.”

Another woman tweeted: “70k to clone their old dog...when there are THOUSANDS of dogs that need rescuing every single day. Stupid people. #thismorning.”

While someone else wrote: “Got people out there struggling 2 put food on the table and you got these fools spending £70k on a dead dog #idiots #dogcloning #thismorning.”

Following the death of Dylan the couple flew a total of 33,000 miles and spent in excess of £70,000 to clone Dylan in order to produce not just one - but two - genetically identical puppies, who have been in quarantine for the past six months.

Discussing how alike the pups are to Dylan, Laura said: “They are really similar. They look just like Dylan. Personality wise  - they are very similar.”

This Morning presenter Eamonn then questioned whether they would have a shorter life expectancy to other dogs.

“No, not necessarily,” Laura told him. “The laboratory we used keep an eye on the dogs – I think they’ve done about 800 dogs now. So far they have normal healthy lives. They’ve been to my vet and they are in really good health. So they should just live like any normal dog.”

Ruth then asked why they didn’t just adopted – telling them it is what people at home will be thinking.

Laura replied: “We weren’t planning getting another dog. We do have four extra dogs but it’s not like they have taken up the spaces of four rescue dogs.

“The main reason we went ahead with the cloning is because we tried to freeze his cells but because the cells were too weak freeze, rather than waste them we said we would go ahead and try the cloning – thinking it was surely not going to work because it has never worked before in the world after that length of time.”

She went on to reveals that she was never able to adopt a rescue dog in the past

“I’ve tried adopting rescue dogs but I‘ve not been able to before. I’ve tried tens and tens of times,” she said.
