Top Gear future uncertain for Matt LeBlanc as he reveals he’s not been offered contract yet
The former Friends star speaks out after Chris Evans steps down as main host from the show
MATT LeBlanc says he’s “not sure” what is happening with Top Gear.
The show didn’t get off to the best start, with critics panning the revamp and ratings being low.
Promoting his new show Man With a Plan, the former Friends star said: “I’m not sure what’s happening with Top Gear just yet, but this is my priority.”
When asked about whether or not he would return, Matt replied: “I don’t know. I’d like to. There’s nothing officially happening just yet, call the BBC.”
The 49-yeart-old’s co-host Chris Evans stepped down from his role on the show shortly after the series came to an end in June.
The ginger presenter tweeted: “Stepping down from Top Gear. Gave it my best shot but sometimes that's not enough. The team are beyond brilliant, I wish them all the best.”
The TV and radio star resigned from the newly revamped car show after just one season at its helm.
He told the Daily Mail he was a “square peg in a round hole”.
The 50-year-old said: “One way or another, however, the Top Gear ship has been steadily refloated, a new production team and presentation team established and I, for one, will continue to be a huge fan. “
He added that he tipped co-host Matt to take over the lead of the show: “For me, he is the man. He is the captain Top Gear truly needs going forward, the perfect torso for the rest of TG’s limbs.”
"Not only does he eat, sleep, breathe and dream engines, propshafts and trail-braking, but the overwhelming quality that struck me about him is that he's just such a pro.
"The whole time I worked with him, he never once looked at the clock, was never late on set, knew his lines inside out and back to front and, most importantly on such an intense production, he always had time for everyone, especially the crew."
Matt enjoyed global success with hit show Friends, and at one point the cast were highest paid TV stars in the world.
