What is the Amy Winehouse Foundation?

The Amy Winehouse Foundation was set up in 2011, and since then the charity has established itself as one of the UK's leading groups working alongside young people.

The foundation also works with teachers and parents to help build emotional resilience to stress and anxiety, to prevent youngsters from turning to drugs and alcohol in order to cope.

Volunteers at the foundation explain the dangers associated with substance misuse by telling of their own personal experiences.

This work is carried out by a mix of face-to-face-sessions, online assemblies and workshops.

The foundation also supports other similar charities to better understand the problems facing youngsters.

In honour of Amy's musical background, the foundation has funded and built a dedicated music room at Haven House children's hospice in Essex.

Children and their families can enjoy music led by therapists as part of the end-of-life care provided by the hospice.

Why was the Amy Winehouse Foundation established?

The foundation was established shortly after the singer's death to honour the star's life and to prevent young people falling into the same traps as Amy.

The foundation uses Amy's name to build on the singer's legacy and to raise awareness of the issue of young people turning to alcohol and drugs in times of stress.

The Brit and Grammy award-winner suffered from drug and alcohol addiction, and eventually agreed to undergo rehab alongside her partner in 2007.

However, her rehabilitation was short lived and she soon returned to addiction to help cope with her stresses, which the foundation would later focus on when it was launched in 2011.

Amy's stepbrother Michael is a trustee at the foundation, and has also established his own charity to work with youngsters on their mental health in honour of Amy.
