What was Kim Kardashian’s ‘wet dress’ at the Met Gala?
KIM Kardashian has had her fair share of jaw-dropping fashion looks, and the TV personality is known to show up dressed to the nines for fashion's biggest night.
The reality star-turned-entrepreneur won praise for her skin-tight, beige latex ensemble, designed by a prestigious fashion house for the 2019 Met Gala.
What was Kim Kardashian’s ‘wet dress’ at the Met Gala?
The theme for the 2019 Met Gala was "Camp: Notes on Fashion."
Camp, by fashion definition, is an "aesthetic style and sensibility that regards something as appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value."
Kim's skin-tight dress was designed to appear as if she had just stepped out of the ocean.
The dress, which was made out of latex and adorned with beads to resemble water droplets, took eight months to complete according to .
The mom-of-four also wore a tight, custom-made corset by famed corset maker Mr. Pearl to execute the illusion of a tiny waist.
Her hair was waved and laid with gel to further add to the 'wet' look.
In a trailer for Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Kim said that her dress was so tight that she struggled to go to the bathroom.
She said that she could hardly sit down and that she would've needed to enlist the help of her sisters if there was a bladder emergency.
"If I gotta pee, it's a problem," Kim said.
"I think if it's an emergency, I would pee my pants and then have my sister wipe my leg up," she said, completely straight-faced.
"I'm not even joking," she added.
Who designed Kim Kardashian's 'wet dress'?
Kim Kardashian's 'wet dress' was designed by Thierry Mugler.
Mugler was a French fashion designer, creative director, and the creative advisor of Mugler, his own fashion house.
The famous designer was known for his avante-garde, theatrical approach to couture clothing, making him a perfect choice to design a "Camp" inspired look for the 2019 Met Gala.
Mugler initially retired back in 2002, which was the last year he designed a collection of his own.
He returned to the Mugler brand in 2013 as a creative advisor and stepped out of retirement a few years later to design Kardashian's Met Gala ensemble.
"He envisioned me as this California girl stepping out of the ocean, wet, dripping,” Kim said when interviewed by Vogue on the Met red carpet.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Mugler passed away just a few years later on January 23, 2022, at the age of 73.
Kardashian paid tribute to the fashion icon on her Instagram, sharing photos of her wearing Mugler's designs over the years.
"Manfred Thierry Mugler 💔 My heart breaks. There’s no one like you!" she .
What was Kim Kardashian's Marilyn Monroe dress?
Kim Kardashian continuously proves that the only celebrity who can outdo her on the red carpet is herself.
Despite rocking extravagant looks for several Met Galas in a row, Kardashian's 2022 Met Gala ensemble was truly one-of-a-kind.
Kardashian – with the help of her momager, Kris Jenner – was able to convince Ripley's Believe It or Not to loan her Marilyn Monroe's iconic Happy Birthday, Mr. President dress.
Monroe famously wore the sheer, sparkling number to John F. Kennedy's 45th birthday celebration in Madison Square Garden, where she sang "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" to JFK himself.
The gown was sketched by costume designer Bob Mackie, and created by Jean Louis, a French-American costume designer.
The gown's color was intended to give off the illusion that Monroe was nude.
The dress was then embellished with thousands of discretely placed crystals, diamonds, and rhinestones, providing a sparkly, shimmery look as Monroe moved around.
Kim famously – and controversially – told media outlets that she lost 16 pounds in the span of a few weeks to fit into the original dress, which she only ended up wearing for a few minutes.
“I’m extremely respectful to the dress and what it means to American history,” she told Vogue.

“I would never want to sit in it or eat in it or have any risk of any damage to it and I won’t be wearing the kind of body makeup I usually do.”
After walking the Met Gala red carpet, Kardashian changed into a replica of the look, allowing her to let loose for the rest of the night.
