Stars of Channel 4 show pay tribute to narrator Caroline Aherne

The actress passed away yesterday after a battle with cancer

THE stars of Gogglebox have paid tribute to the show’s narrator Caroline Aherne who passed away yesterday following a battle with cancer.

The Bafta-winning actress narrated the Channel 4 show from its very first show in 2013 and while she never met most of the cast, many took to social media to pay their respects.

An official statement from the show was posted on Twitter and said: “On behalf of the whole Gogglebox family, we are devastated about the passing of our dearest Caroline, who we all adored.”

Cast members retweeted the statement and then took to their own pages to pay tribute.

Couple Steph and Dom wrote: “Stop Goggling – turn off the box – the world has changed today – RIP Caroline Aherne – you will be hugely missed #respectfulchinchin”

Scarlett Moffatt added her thoughts and wrote: “Can’t believe what I am hearing. What a beautiful, inspiring woman we have lost.

Sandra, one half of best friends Sandra and Sandi, wrote: “Just woke up and saw dis… Caroline Aherne… I never met you but was the best voice on Gogglebox… RIP.”

Louis Michael, from Brighton-based family The Michaels added: “It was a privilege having you soothe the nations with accounts of my family’s antics.

“We’ll miss you Caroline.”

Lee and Jenny added that the news was "heartbreaking", while Studio Lambert which makes the show said it was "desperately sad" to lose a "brilliant comic".

Caroline was just 52 when she died yesterday morning from lung cancer and was known by many from BBC sitcom The Royle Family, sketch show The Fast Show and for her much-loved chat show host character Mrs Merton.

In recent years she gained a new bunch of fans as the voice of the Channel 4 show who praised her when she returned to the show in February.

She had been forced to put her voiceovers on hold while receiving hospital treatment, with pal and writing partner Craig Cash filling in for her.
