Lindsay Lohan accepts offer to switch on Kettering town centre Christmas lights after ‘offensive’ Brexit tweet
The actress agreed to MP Philip Hollobone’s offer to make amends with its residents
LINDSAY Lohan will find out exactly where the town of Kettering is after she accepted the town’s offer to come and switch on its Christmas lights.
The actress was called to task by Kettering’s MP Philip Hollobone who slammed the actress in the House of Commons for her tweet about the Northamptonshire town during the EU Referendum last week.
And yesterday he invited her to visit the town to make amends and invited her to turn the lights this Christmas to redeem herself.
And she took to her Twitter today and happily accepted.
Last Thursday night, as the results filtered in from all over the UK, Lindsay was live Tweeting as each town and city’s result was called out.
Kettering voted ‘LEAVE’ and as the result was called, Lindsay tweeted: “#REMAIN Sorry, but #KETTERING where are you & why is this woman @BBCNews speaking on people rather than TELLING us what happens if the UK LEAVES?"
Hollobone said her tweet was “fierce and offensive” and said her tweet implied that she had never heard of Kettering and said it also implied that no-one had heard of the town - before listing the town's accolades.
Speaking in the Commons, Mr Hollobone told MPs: “Apart from the fact it might be the most average town in the country, everyone knows where Kettering is.
“It’s famous as the home of Weetabix breakfast cereal, Cheaney’s and Loake’s shoes, and Kettering Town Football Club has scored more goals in the history of the FA Cup than any other football team in the country.
He added that if she came and turned the lights on, this would redeem her reputation and she responded: “Direct message me about your offer. Would be happy to light the Christmas tree in #Kettering."
Mr Hollobone, who backed the Leave campaign, said it was "fantastic news".
Lindsay caused quite a stir during the referendum results night when she lived tweeted her thoughts on all the results coming in to her nine million followers.
Lindsay asked Prime Minister David Cameron how she could convince voters to stay in the EU.
She then posted a link to an article which stated ‘Ten reasons to vote Remain in the EU referendum”.
