Why Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis stormed off Good Morning Britain

MARTIN Lewis stormed off Good Morning Britain today amid a conversation about percentages.

The Money Saving Expert left presenters Susanna Reid and Ben Shepherd gobsmacked as he staged a mock tantrum on live TV.

Jumping up from his seat, he shouted: “That’s it, I’m gone. I’m not coming back!”

His walk-off was triggered after he told the hosts about his pet peeve  – people incorrectly talking about percentages.

He ranted: “There is no such thing as 110%. It doesn’t make sense.

“If the editor is watching the programme right now and would like me to make a little film explaining why 110% is inaccurate and the only time it is accurate, I will happily to do that to get the message across to everyone.”

Amused by the situation Susanna joked that she would put it on her own website before revealing that the editor had said “no , we don’t want that!” in her ear.

Not giving up, a riled up Martin said: “Tweet @gmb if you would like to see my film. We are having a lot of people’s revolutions at the moment. Let’s have one about this.”

Sparking Martin’s walk-out,  Ben joked: “Martin Lewis everybody – always giving us 110%.”

Looking rather pleased with himself Ben then said: “See, that’s how we get him to shut up.”

Martin later explained his decision to storm off set in a video for the Good Morning Britain Twitter account.

He started: “They asked me to record a video about why I have such pent up, nerd aggression on this.  People of Britain I am calling on all of us nerds who are mathematically literate to unite to get rid of this atrocious, abdominal piece of phrasing.

“Here’s the problem, you cannot give 110% effort. By definition the way percentages work – your maximum effort is 100% . Let’s suppose you give more effort than you have ever given before, suppose for some reason you are capable of more effort than ever before. While I accept you can do more than you previously did – the maximum percentage is still 100% of the new effort. You are still only giving 100%.”

He continued his rant explaining the rare occasion you can have over 100%.

“So if you say he has increased his effort by 250% over what he had been doing in the past – that would have a level of mathematical accuracy because you are not talking about the maximum capacity but the change,” he ranted.

“But the way this phrasing is used clumsily, horribly on shows like X Factor that drive me mad.”

Concluding his passionate plea, he begged: “Let’s all get a little more mathematically accurate. Let’s applaud people who say they gave 100%. Bravo you gave everything you possibly could. Those people who give a 110%? You’re making it up. I don’t trust you, I don’t believe you.”

Those watching at home were clearly rather tickled by the situation and many tweeted their support for Martin – telling him it was also their pet peeve.

One person tweeted: “OMG I have this argument on a daily basis. It is so annoying! Used a lot on things like xfactor .”

While someone else joked: “Martin your 107% right..well done mate.”

And another person added: “I was laughing my little head off this morning…”
