LIAM Payne has praised his former One Direction band mate Harry Styles for his 'great' Vogue shoot.

Harry, 26, caused a stir when he made Vogue history by becoming the first male to appear solo on the cover of the US edition since it was first printed 128 years ago.

Unfortunately, Harry was criticised for wearing a striking grey dress with a tailored blazer in the photo shoot, as well as other androgynous looks.

However, the pop star poked fun at the backlash by posting one of the images on his Instagram and captioning it: "Bring back manly men."

Appearing on the Capital FM Breakfast Show, dad-of-one Liam spoke to host Roman Kemp about the criticism.

"He’s not someone to cause controversy I mean kind of looking through this year was the most talked about thing was his Vogue cover and I mean his reaction to it was perfect, 'we need more manly men'," Roman said.

"I mean what did you make of it when you saw him on the cover of Vogue?" the presenter added.

"Oh I thought it was great, I think he’s enjoying himself and he’s free to do as he wishes and you know I just think that people don’t need to be so bothered about stuff," Liam replied.

"There’s been a lot more stuff going on this year than whether or not he’s wearing the right clothes in someone else’s mind.

"Just let him go on with it, he’s enjoying himself," his former band mate added.

Liam's supportive comments come as One Direction fans remain hopeful that the boy band might eventually reunite in 2021.

Harry and Liam found fame alongside Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan when they made it to The X Factor final back in 2010.

The band went on hiatus in January 2016, allowing all members to pursue other projects.

As of 2020, the band have sold a total of 70 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.
