“The key aspect of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? was that you could not afford a single mistake when answering,” he told .
While speed wasn't an issue, "the knowledge that any error would be terminal caused a great deal of pressure".
What surprised him when appearing on the show 16 years ago was the height of the chair - apparently a deliberate ploy to unsettle contestants.
And at one stage, host Christ Tarrant called for an ad break and left the set.
“This left me in a sort of limbo, not knowing my fate, with a tense crowd watching me, a solitary figure, with a slightly uncertain immediate future, perched centre-stage on a very high stool.
“It felt like a very long time,” Gibson added.
Hailing from Galway, Ireland, he studied for an engineering degree at University College Galway, says .
Gibson - who moved to Wexford when a teen - then re-trained as a computer programmer, and worked as a software developer for 20 years.
Dubbed "one of the world's smartest men", he was a star pupil when it came to studying maths at school, and was a great atlas reader as a child.
Since his Millionaire win, Gibson has also been crowned Mastermind champion, Mastermind Champion of Champions, and Brain of Britain.
He has also landed a regular role on BBC Two show Eggheads.

Irish quiz champion Pat Gibson scooped the grand prize in 2004.
“No doubt about it, it was an extraordinary experience," he told Shortlist.
Amazingly Pat had TWO of his lifelines still available for his final question, something no other winner has managed.
He narrowed down the answers with 50:50, then used Phone-a-Friend to call another quizzing champion and confirm what he had thought was the right answer, which it was.
