At the beginning of the show, a statement appeared on screen saying: "This programme has been edited and features 3 of the original 4 contestants who took part."

The contestant, who viewers believe is a man, was notably missing from the skills test segment.

Instead, the BBC chose only to show Burhan from Coventry, Guillame from London and Scott from Manchester.

A MasterChef spokesperson confirmed to The Sun Online: "Due to unforeseen circumstances concerning one of our contestants, the programme was edited to remove their appearance."

Following the show, viewers flocked to social media to speculate over the missing contestant.

One wrote on Twitter: "Are we ever going to find out what happened to the fourth contestant in today’s #MasterchefTheProfessionals episode?"

A second said: "Have spent all night and all morning speculating as to why one of the chefs was edited out of yesterday evenings episode of #MasterchefTheProfessionals."

A third added: "I don’t even watch MasterChef: The Professionals but this happened last night and I need to know the backstory which seems to be shrouded in secrecy."

A fourth exclaimed: "HOW AM I GOING TO GET TO SLEEP WITHOUT KNOWING?! #4thcontestant #masterchefuk #mastercheftheprofessionals."

The new series of the hit BBC show began on Tuesday, November 10.

Like previous series, the episodes will air consecutively on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

In 2019 the competition was won by Stu Deeley, a chef from Birmingham who had already worked as a head chef before entering the competition.
