Speaking over a video clip of the mother in Arkansas showing off her innovative candy shoot, McCoy explained that it was ensuring sweets would be "delivered safely" on 31st October.

He went over how the contraption of PVC pipes were constructed so that the mum could hand out treats from a distance, concluding the piece with: "The transaction is entirely contactless."

McCoy then muttered under his breath: "As will be her social life" as the camera cut back to him in the BBC studio.

A shocked fan shared the clip on Twitter, writing: "This is a brutal quip at the end of a news report by @BBCSimonMcCoy".

And people could not get enough of the "burn", with one replying: "Absolutely savage."

Another added: "Quality. Worth the TV license alone."

A third giggled: "Oh my god I knew to expect something because of your tweet, but that legitimately shocked me. So funny".

One more agreed: "Why is @BBCSimonMcCoy the best?! Seriously the only joyous thing about the news!"

Parents have been left at a loss over what to do this Halloween due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier this week, Downing Street confirmed that children are permitted to trick-or-treat in Tier 1 and 2 areas as it takes place outdoors - but they must take extra health and safety precautions.

The Prime Minister’s spokesman said: “The rules are there for all circumstances and people will have to use their common sense in ensuring they have followed the rules.”

But he declined to say that families across the country should shun the traditional fun.

And Iain Duncan Smith, former Tory leader, said: “The tendency right now is for us to dwell on the misery and the problems.

"But it is nice to know children will get at least one evening where they can have fun. I am glad for them.”

Existing restrictions mean people can meet in groups of six outdoors in Tier 1 and 2.

But harsher rules in Tier 3 — which includes Merseyside, Lancashire, South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester and Warrington — prevent households mixing in a garden and trick-or-treating is not permitted in these areas.
