Kate Garraway comforted by Susanna Reid as she tells GMB there are ‘ups and worrying downs’ in Derek’s Covid battle

KATE Garraway was comforted by Susanna Reid as she told Good Morning Britain her husband is stable but there are "ups" and "worrying downs" in his Covid battle.

The Good Morning Britain star gave viewers an update on Derek Draper's condition as she said her kids Darcy and Billy hadn't seen their dad in months.

Show host Susanna asked Kate how she was doing, and Kate replied: "I'm doing OK thank you.

"The problem is, I feel like I'm boring everyone to death because it ends up being the same, he is stable but actually in beteween there are big ups and downs. Not big ups - small improvements and worrying downs.

"The last few days have been pretty stable so we are keeping everything crossed.

"Darcy has not been able to see Derek, his mum and dad haven't been able to see him. They are in tier 2 in Lancashire and so could go into lockdown and might not be able to see him for months."

On people rallying against lockdowns, Kate said: "I'm conscious that I've been in a very strange place and what (the kids) could do with is a little bit of fun on their half term something out of the house.

"It would be nice to go somewhere else, so I get why people would feel that and if you haven't got someone as seriously ill as Derek is...

"But when I see Derek I just think nobody in the country would want that for anyone they love or themselves."

Susanna turned to Kate and appeared emotional as she assured her that hearing about Derek has inspired others.

She said: "It's not boring anybody. I know you are concerned with that.

"But you are amazing because you always have a smile on your face, you are an inspiring person."

The Sun recently revealed Derek is now the country’s longest-fighting Covid-19 patient after marking six months in hospital.

He was was hospitalised on March 28 and has spent more than 180 days in and out of intensive care.

Since falling ill with symptoms at the end of March, Derek tested positive and was then admitted to intensive care where he was put on a ventilator.

He spent several weeks in ICU, before being woken from an induced coma in July.

Since then he has been in a state of “minimum consciousness” — and has yet to utter his first word.

Derek has had at least two health scares since then, including two big falls in blood pressure and a swelling in his legs which medics feared was a clot.

He has also lost a staggering eight stone since his ordeal began.
