Sheridan Smith’s understudy Natsha J Barnes admits she ‘can’t wait’ for the star to return
Natasha speaks to This Morning hosts about playing the role of Fanny Brice in Funny Girl as Sheridan takes break for stress
FUNNY Girl understudy Natasha J Barnes has spoken of her gratitude to Sheridan Smith, saying working with the actress has been "the best learning curve" but admits she "can't wait" for the star to return.
Natasha has been receiving rave reviews after she took on the role of Fanny Brice when Sheridan, 34, signed off sick from the show due to "stress and exhaustion."
Speaking to This Morning hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on Thursday's show, the budding star explained she hadn't received traditional drama school training but had worked her way up in the industry.
She said: "I’ve been working on and off for about eight years since I was 18.
"I moved up to London and have been slogging away, so I was happy to be Sheridan's understudy for the show."
Natasha went on: "I’ve been lucky with this part - and this show - because Sheridan's amazing.
"I play her dresser in the show when I'm not playing Fanny and I get to follow her around everywhere – it’s just been the best learning curve.
"I feel that’s almost been my training to watch someone like that."
Sheridan, who has appeared in Gavin & Stacey and The Royle Family, sparked health concerns in April when a performance of the hit musical at the Savoy Theatre in central London was halted after 30 minutes.

The decision to cancel the performance was blamed on “technical difficulties” but outraged audience members claimed the Cilla star appeared to be drunk.
She prompted further concerns when she took to Twitter for a series of late night rants in which she insulted her critics and threatened to flee to America.
During her break she has been resting in plush country retreats and spending time with her dad Colin, who was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.
According to producers, Sheridan is now set to return to the West End show by July 11th.
Natasha admitted to Holly and Phil that she "can't wait to see her", and revealed Sheridan told her to make the role her own if she ever got the chance.
"She told me to make it my own if I went on," said Natasha. "It’s very much a bittersweet thing.
"It's been a difficult challenge for me to know this could be my part for a little while and trying to put my own stamp on it, especially when I'm following Barbra Streisand and Sheridan Smith!"
But she added: "I feel quite comfortable with that now."
