BAKE Off 2019 winner David Atherton has got engaged to boyfriend Nik after a romantic proposal in Bulgaria.

The 37-year-old said he couldn't stop crying when he popped the question as he gushed about their happiness in a sweet Instagram post.

David wrote alongside a photo of the couple: "We put a ring on it 💍👨🏽‍🤝‍👨🏻😍(it doesn’t fit, but I measured my own finger badly with a tape measure….not to be advised) 😂.

"I’m not sure I actually asked the question because I was basically crying so much. I didn’t have a plan B so I’m glad he said yes.

"The smiles on our faces say it all, AND Nik is speechless as he says he’s still processing (the first time ever I’m one step ahead of this guy😳)."

David said it was even more special because the pair had never believed they would be allowed to get married before same sex marriage was legalised.

He went on: "This moment is especially special because it seems so surreal. Growing up both Nik and I didn’t think we’d ever be able to legally and publicly celebrate our commitment❤️.

"We need to keep fighting for all those living in places where this isn’t possible or where there is hostility. Love wins"

Their friends and fans rushed to congratulate them, as one said: "SO much love to you both ❤️❤️❤️❤️ CONGRATULATIONS CANT WAIT TO SQUEEZE YOU."

Another wrote: "Congratulations 🥳 so happy for you both and many happy ever afters A x."

David was brought up in Yorkshire, where his mother, who was an avid baker, inspired him to take it up.

He continued to explore his pastry-making abilities when he travelled to Malawi, among other places, as part of his work as a health adviser.

In Malawi, he learned to build an oven out of an oil drum and invented a cake that could steam cook over a village fire.
