The Second World War hero made headlines for his record-breaking charity walks in his garden in aid of the NHS, which led to him being knighted.

Referring to his accident last year, when he shattered his right hip and broke a rib after hitting his head on dishwasher at home he said: “I have always felt that if somebody is gravely ill and near to death to bring them back for them to die a very unpleasant death, why do that? If you have gone, you have gone.

“I did not want to finish up in an old people’s home without any facility of my own, having to be fed in every way. I would hate ever to be like that.”

And the active centenarian, who got fit again by buying a treadmill, insisted 40 was the new 100 and he stayed young by having a glass of wine every day.

Dame Joan Collins also makes a surprise appearance on a video link to ask him on a date. The actress said: “One day we should meet and break bread or have a cocktail.”

Lifting the lid on his chat with Capt Tom, show host Piers Morgan revealed the national treasure was an "unashamed ladies' man".

Piers said: "He asked if he could come on the show, and on his rider was a can of coke, Dairy Milk chocolate bar and six blondes.”
