Top Gear film new series with 500-strong outdoor drive-in audience

TOP GEAR is famous for huge stunts and ambitious ideas but getting back in the studio was a step too far during the pandemic.

Instead, they have supersized the show and managed to film in front of an audience in an ingenious way.

Hosts Freddie Flintoff, Chriss Harris and Paddy McGuinness entertained a 500-strong outdoor drive-in audience on the show’s iconic track on Tuesday night.

Producers, filming the first of five episodes over three nights, left their regular studio hangar and instead invited 160 fan-filled cars to Surrey.

I got invited down and was given a lovely Aston Martin to replace my normal motor for the night.

And the show – the first to be shown on BBC1 – didn’t disappoint.

Highlights included a heart-stopping Wall of Death sequence filmed inside an empty Alexandra Palace, where the presenters go vertical in insurance write-off cars, Paddy’s ill-fated Lamborghini incident in the Yorkshire Dales and Freddie attempting 200mph in an old Nineties supercar.
